What is Physical Therapy?

School-based physical therapists work with children of all ages to improve movement, strength, balance, coordination, and overall physical participation in the school environment. Physical challenges may affect a child’s ability to move safely, access and navigate the learning environment, or maintain posture for learning. These challenges may begin early in life and can impact a child’s educational participation and daily school activities.

School-based physical therapists facilitate the development of a child’s skills in various areas, including but not necessarily limited to:

  • Gross Motor Skills
  • Balance and Coordination Difficulties
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Mobility and Walking Challenges
  • Postural Control and Positioning Needs
  • Transfers and Functional Mobility
  • Access to School Environments and Equipment
  • Participation in Classroom, Playground, and School Activities
