What is Occupational Therapy?

The profession of occupational therapy focuses on enhancing an individual’s ability to participate in meaningful daily activities, otherwise known as “occupations”.  An individual’s occupation may include a profession or trade; however, it may also include leisure activities, taking care of the home or oneself, and many other meaningful activities that may occur during the course of a day.

The primary “occupations” of a child include learning and playing.  As children get older, they become independent with taking care of their own needs like brushing their hair, brushing their teeth, and getting dressed.  As children become more independent and prepare to attend educational programs, school activities become increasingly important.  Occupational therapists help children that may be having difficulty reaching developmental milestones or completing skills independently that are expected for their age level.

At Community Therapy Services, we specialize in providing occupational therapy services for children, as well as support services for caregivers and school personnel, using telehealth technology.

Occupational therapists facilitate the development of a child’s skills in various areas, including but not necessarily limited to:

  • Fine Motor Skills
  • Visual Motor and Perceptual Skills
  • Written Productivity (handwriting versus keyboarding)
  • Functional Technology Skills
  • Self-Help Skills
  • Sensory Processing Abilities
  • Executive Function Skills (e.g., organization, planning, regulating emotions, attention, self-monitoring)
